1. Smallest Bird in North America
We couldn't believe how tiny the Calliope Hummingbird is when we first saw it. In fact, this little marvel is the smallest bird in all of North America. It weighs only about 2.4 grams (less than a penny!), making it incredibly light and agile.
2. Vibrant Plumage
One of the most striking features of the Calliope Hummingbird is its iridescent plumage. We were mesmerized by its brilliant magenta throat patch, which shines with different hues depending on the angle of the light. The males have this bright, colorful patch that makes them especially easy to spot.
3. Remarkable Migrator
We were amazed to learn that these little birds are long-distance migrants. Every year, they travel thousands of miles from their breeding grounds in the western United States to winter in Mexico. Imagine such a tiny bird navigating such a long journey!

5. Specialized Diet

When it comes time for courtship, male Calliope Hummingbirds put on an impressive aerial display to attract females. We were lucky enough to witness one of these shows, where the male performs a series of rapid dives and chatter calls to catch the attention of a female.
10. Rapid Breeders
In a single breeding season, the female Calliope Hummingbird can raise 2 to 3 broods. Each brood consists of two tiny eggs, and the female raises the young alone. The sight of such a tiny bird becoming a mother is heartwarming!
